Year-end payroll is a critical time, and mistakes can prove costly. This year, the challenges seem insurmountable. New changes to tips and overtime reporting from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and continuing confusion around SECURE 2.0 (the significant 401(k) reform law) will impact W-2 and 1099 reporting. These changes don’t just put a premium on your skills as a payroll pro. They will also test your soft skills—communicating crucial changes to employees and your Benefits team to ensure compliance and avoid fines.
This year has more payroll challenges than ever
The OBBBA’s tax deduction for overtime is more and less than it appears. Yes, almost all nonexempts will be able to deduct something on their Forms 1040. But probably not as much as they think. The deduction is limited to the half-time premium. This isn’t how employees normally think about overtime. The first hint of trouble will be when employees receive their 2025 W-2s. You will need to communicate about this carefully.
And finally, don’t overlook the complexities of gathering data for remote employees working in multiple states. Failure to properly report these details on W-2 forms can lead to fines and increased scrutiny from the IRS.
